Scotland Against New Coal is opposed to the building of new coal-fired power stations and the extension of the life of existing sites.

Scottish Power is currently considering extending the life of its Longannet Power Station in Fife. At a time when we should be cutting our carbon emissions, such a decision would lock Scotland into a high-carbon economy for another generation.
Coal is the dirtiest fuel there is and Scottish Power’s plans to continue to burn coal unabated at Longannet would be disastrous for the climate.
Going ahead with current proposals for Longannet will destroy any chance Scotland has of meeting its targets for reducing carbon emissions.
Coal is an unnecessary step backwards in a country which has enormous potential for renewable energy. Serious investment in alternative technologies like large scale wind, wave, and tidal power will create jobs and put Scotland at the forefront of a new industry.
We are asking Scottish Power not to extend the life of the Longannet station, but to invest in clean, green renewable energy instead.
